Vintage engagement rings and the art deco style of the 1920s is making a reappearance, even though the style never truly went away. Vintage engagement rings are beautiful because they are timeless, and they are a beautiful way to complement and enhance your unique tastes.

What makes an engagement ring vintage?

The term “vintage” refers to something that is at least 30 years old, while “antique” refers to anything at least 100 years old. When it comes to engagement rings, “vintage” usually signifies the ring’s style rather than age. In general, if you’re looking for a vintage engagement ring, you’re really looking for a modern, vintage-style engagement ring.

Vintage engagement ring styles

Vintage engagement rings come in many different styles and variations. You might say you want a vintage engagement ring, but what you really want is a square-cut art deco inspired engagement ring. It’s good to be specific about which time period you are most drawn to, so that you can find the perfect ring for you.

Victorian Era (1835-1900)

Victorian Era inspired vintage engagement rings are characterised by the frequent use of yellow gold or rose gold and diamond combination. Rows, halos, and clusters of diamonds became popular during this era. As large diamonds were uncommon at this time, people wore diamond solitaire engagement rings, alongside popular bypass setting, which is a common choice for modern styles today.

Edwardian Era (1900-1920)

Intricate, lacy designs were spearheaded during the Edwardian Era. Rings from this period were generally platinum and included delicate metalwork called filagree, in designs featuring scrolling, ribbons, and vines. Floral motifs were also popular.

Art Deco Era (1920-1940)

In direct contrast to the lightness of Edwardian styles, Art Deco was all about bold geometry and repeating patterns. Art Deco rings often included metalwork with repeating, sharp angles and very small beads called milgrain. Art deco rings are making a comeback, but with more modern twists.
