Diamonds have a long history as beautiful objects of desire. In all etymologies, the word for diamond has been linked to strength and power. For the Greek, it derives from adamas, meaning unconquerable and indestructible. This plays into the belief that diamonds cannot truly be possessed by us, as they are destined to outlive their owners.

From pop culture to our television screens and the media, diamonds have always been considered the pinnacle of beauty when it comes to precious gemstones. But where have diamonds come from, and how have they risen to such high esteem?

history of diamonds

Diamond History

Diamonds first appeared in India, where they were gathered from the country’s rivers and streams after being expelled from the earth. Historians estimate that India was trading in diamonds as early as during the fourth century BC, which is where the country made its exponential wealth at the time. Gradually, diamonds found their way to the West through various trade routes, and by the 1400s diamonds were a highly sought-after fashion accessory for Europe’s most elite.

When India’s diamond supplies had diminished, Brazil became the newest source of the incredibly popular gemstone during the 1700s, where they ruled the diamond market for over 150 years.

During The Belle Époque, and its emphasis on refinement and femininity, a new scene for the age of diamonds was born. Spearheaded by De Beers, new South African diamond reserves were discovered. Diamonds became the focus for fashionable society and filtered down to America and to Hollywood.

With diamonds becoming more widely accessible through luxury jewellers, they became less about myths and legends and more about celebrations, commitments, and promises. The giving and receiving of a diamond engagement ring became a universal symbol of love which was exemplified with the coining of the famous advertising slogan, 'A diamond is forever’ by De Beers in 1947.

Even though the meaning we ascribe to diamonds has changed and evolved over time, our love for diamonds has not waned. They have always been an incredibly popular gemstone, with a rich history. Even if trends today are veering away from the iconic colourless diamond and more towards opulent coloured diamonds, the colourless diamond will stay a true timeless piece.
