The Power of 3D Printing

Although its origins date back to the 1980's, it's only been in recent years that the power of 3D printing technology has been fully realised, and none more so in the jewellery trade. For the modern day jewellery designer, using 3D printing is a chance to show the customer a complete render of their item before it gets made.

David Clark, MD of W.E Clark and Son explains "We have been using 3D printing for about 2 years now. Each piece is designed and created using CAD (Computer Aided Design) and then 3D printed before going to be crafted. The whole process takes around six weeks."

W.E Clark and Son have also seen first hand, how 3D printing has helped their customers during the jewellery making process. David continues "The benefits are truly amazing for the customer. We are now able to present a number of variations to them, and if necessary easily amend the design."

Although 3D printing is a new and important part of the way designers create their pieces it's not the end of hand made jewellery. "I think there is still a place for traditionally 'hand-made' jewellery, especially for the very high-end bespoke pieces. said David.

With the opportunities that 3D technology brings W.E Clark and Son will almost certainly find further ways to increase what it offers and be at the very forefront of bespoke jewellery design.
