Ruby

Rubies together with amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and diamond are known as traditional cardinal gems as they are considered the most precious above all others and are still very popular today.

Pink to deepest red in colour, Ruby is the gemstone that represents the birth month of July. The name ruby comes from the Latin word ruber, which means “red.”

A source for many of the world’s rubies are from Mogok, a valley in Myanmar which was formerly known as Burma, a ruby source since 600 AD.

The largest mined Ruby was discovered in East Africa in the 1950’s weighing 4lbs and a total of eight and a half thousand carats which in 1976 was then sculpted into a miniature version of The Liberty Bell. This was created for the Beverly Hills Kazanjian brothers for their jewellery company by sculptor Alfonso De Vivanco and is set with 50 Diamonds and estimated to be worth $2million.
