The birthstone representing the month of May is Emerald, it also signifies the twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.

Emerald is known for its attractive green to greenish-blue colour. It belongs to the gemstone family Beryl, alongside Morganite and Aquamarine, with a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Countries Emeralds are mined include Columbia, Brazil and Central Asia.

Emeralds are traditionally finished as an Emerald cut stone but can also come in other varying cuts suitable for setting in all types of fine jewellery. Just like all gem stones, every Emeralds have different hues, different inclusions and different levels of transparency.

The first known mined Emeralds date back to 330BC. They are known to be one of Cleopatra’s favourite gemstones, associated with fertility, beauty and love, they were set in all of her Royal adornments.

Ancient Romans dedicated the stone to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Today it is thought to signify growth, wisdom and patience.
