There are four important factors that determine the value of a diamond. The diamonds used by wec-online.com are sourced direct by David and John Clark which in turn means superb value for money is offered.

Clarity

Clarity refers to how blemish free the stone is, both inside and on the surface. Small carbon deposits or other inclusions, cracks, fissures all detract from a diamond's value. These small imperfections can be referred to as nature's fingerprints, the presence of inclusions is not a negative feature as it shows the stone is authentic.

Colour

Although it is generally thought that diamonds are colourless, there are actually a wide range of hues which can greatly affect value. Colourless or near-colourless diamonds can be graded. Diamond colours are generally graded on an alphabetic scale, from D, which is the best, to Z, which is a distinctly yellowish-brown colour. However, if a diamond has a strong colour it is termed a fancy coloured diamond and some such stones are much sought after.

Carat Weight

The weight of a diamond is given in its carat equivalent. One carat is 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points, i.e. 100 points equals 1.0 carat. The carat weight of a stone does not itself set the value of a stone; this depends greatly on the other three variables that exist; Colour, Clarity, Cut.

Cut

Cut is the only diamond characteristic directly influenced by man - the other three are dictated by nature. A good round brilliant cut releases the fire, life and sparkle of a diamond through the arrangement and proportions of its 57 or 58 facets (tiny planes that create angles to reflect light). The shape of a diamond is a matter of personal taste, with many different shaped cuts available, for example; pear, oval and heart.

Most simply stated - the majority of gemstones are minerals. Important exceptions are pearl and coral which are of animal origin, jet and amber which are of vegetable origin. These minerals have been crystallised as a result of the high temperatures and pressures exerted by nature on the elements that form the earth's crust.

Of more than 3000 minerals found on the earth, only a small percentage qualify as "gemstones" due to their beauty, durability, colour and rarity. The most sough after are transparent gems, drops of pure colour cut from single crystals. These gems were once divided into precious and semiprecious categories. But this is no longer true today. Gem discoveries have added new varieties to the traditional selection of Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire. Some of these more unusual gemstones command higher prices than more well known gemstones due to their beauty and rarity. For example, fine jade and fine opal, tsavorite or alexandrite would be more valuable than lesser quality diamonds or emeralds of the same carat weight.
